Different Styles Of Christmas Decorating

My approach to Christmas decorating is the same as my approach to any interior design project. I start the process by fine-tuning my or my client's vision, which begins by defining what the overall style aesthetic will be for each room. But what if you aren't quite sure what your Christmas decorating style is? Today's blog has all the answers to your questions. Not only will you find your Christmas decorating style, but I have carefully chosen all my must-haves for the 5 different Christmas styles, Whimsical, Traditional, Minimalist, Modern, and Monochromatic. Come along and flow the path to reveal your Christmas decorating style for 2019!

Take the Quiz

First things first, it's time to follow the path to determine what your Christmas decorating style is?  So, what happens if you find yourself teetering between two or even three different styles, no worries, I will cover that in just a second.

The Results are In

The results are in! I can't wait to hear what your Christmas decorating style is, #MRIChristmas on Instagram to let me know which style or styles you are! I find myself in quite a predicament when I look at my results, finding myself falling both in the modern and monochromatic paths. What do you do when you, too, find yourself in this same dilemma? Just like in my everyday approach to interior design, I integrate different design styles, and I love to do the same with Christmas styles. The key to mixing Christmas styles to achieve a polished look is integrating cohesive colors tones, textures, and layers.

Last year I was full throttle monochromatic. While I am embracing a more modern approach this year, there are a few pieces that I can never see myself parting with like the gold curly garland, the softest cashmere tip tree, or my signature black and white ribbon! Below are some of my favorite pieces I have used for years that you will definitely see in my home again this year.

Whimsical

To create a whimsical Christmas design, you are looking to feature playful elements in your tree and decor. Embracing all the fun, bright, and cheerful pieces, you can get your hands on. This style is one where there can never be too much of anything! The whimsical decor is perfect for the littles or those young at heart. Maddox's playroom Christmas tree features a whimsical style every year; he takes great pride in decorating HIS tree, adding one new ornament each season.

Traditional

There is something about the sight of traditional Christmas decorations that pull at my heartstrings. The mere sighting of a Christmas village takes me back to my grandmother's home. When I was young, my mom and I would work and work perfecting our Christmas village. There is so much nostalgia in Traditional red and green Christmas decorations. Traditional Christmas decorations are classic and timeless, of course.

Minimalist

Over the past year, I have really been embracing minimalist design. If the idea of every inch of your home decorated immediately stresses you out, minimalist Christmas design style is perfect for you. While we all know I love going over the top for Christmas, anyone remember the three Christmas trees in our living room last year? I also appreciate the simplicity of bare garland simply hung or laying atop a mantle. One thing is for sure minimalist Christmas décor is anything but boring.

Modern

I think the biggest misconception is for you to achieve a modern vibe when decorating for Christmas your decorations have to be minimal and unadorned – so not true! Pairing natural elements with clean lines along with geometric shapes, will leave you with a modern Christmas wonderland. Don't forget to layer in blacks and whites, and a hint of sparkle. The key to achieving a modern look is all in the display. Think of new and creative ways to display your Christmas décor collection. I can't wait to share what I have planned for our home this year to get your creative juices flowing.

Monochromatic

If you find the path led you to the monochromatic finish line, then you, my friend, are not alone! Monochromatic is one of the most sought-after designs for Christmas decorations. But what exactly is Monochromatic design? To perfect this look, you are going to start with a single base color, layering in different shades, tints, and tones of the primary hue. The result is the most elegant and dramatic look of them all. Yet, this bold look still feels soft and sophisticated.

Decorating for Christmas has already begun at the Roberts' home, but if you follow my IG you already know that! Maddox and I have a long tradition of starting the process on Halloween night. I love that he enjoys decorating our Christmas tree and his playroom. Before starting, I plan and design for the "big" areas, but what no matter how good my sketch turns out when the time comes to execute, I always change and rearrange. I encourage you, no matter your design style, to find the joy and harness that inner kid and get ready for Santa!
